Sometimes these boards come with the computer when it is purchased, but many times, they are bought separately and you will have to open your computer and install them into one of the available slots. To add a board to your computer's configuration, select Add from the Edit pull-down menu. Before you exit this utility, switch and jumper information may be displayed. Set any switches and jumpers as instructed, and install the board. All boards and options you install in your computer have at least one function; a serial/parallel board has two functions. You may change the choices for a function by selecting Change Function on the Edit pull-down menu when the function you want to change is selected (detailed view only). System resources are DMA channels, IO port address space, IRQ levels, and memory address space. A function on a board may have resources allocated to it. To change a resource choice, select Change Resource on the Edit pull-down menu. To display information about your computer's resources, select Resources on the View pull-down menu. 'Added' is a board status. If a board is added by this utility or manually added, the status is shown as Added. 'Auto-added' is a board status. If a board was installed in your computer and detected by this utility, it is automatically added to the configuration. The status is shown as 'Auto-added'. If a board's configuration (CFG) file is not properly written, it cannot be used by this utility. These 'invalid' CFG files will cause errors which will be displayed when you try to add a board with an 'invalid' CFG file. Board configuration (CFG) files define the functions available on the board and the resources requested by the board. The board manufacturer provides the CFG files for each board or option. To configure your computer, select 'Configure computer' on the main menu. If you are installing boards and options, use one of the 'Copy CFG files...' menu selections to copy a CFG file for each board and option you will be installing to your configuration diskette. Select 'Configure computer - basic method' or 'Configure computer - advanced method' (use the basic method if you are only adding boards and options). The utility will show the boards and options you will be installing to the configuration. If no conflict messages are shown, your computer is correctly configured. View switch, jumper, and software settings, then exit to save the configuration. Turn off your computer, and set any switches and jumpers which need to be changed. Then install your boards and options. When you turn your computer back on, it will be correctly configured. A board or one of the functions on a board may have a conflict with another board. This means that both boards are requesting the same system resource. Since only one board can have the resource, one of the boards will be deactivated and must be removed. For example, if two different network boards in your computer are both requesting IRQ 2, only one of the boards can be configured. Related topics: Change Function, Change Resource, Correcting resource conflicts. An embedded board is a function on a board (usually the system board). However, this function is using a slot address which is different from the slot address in which the board resides. These functions are displayed in the configuration utility as being present in an embedded slot. Board functions can be categorized by function type. The manufacturer may provide a type for each function on a board. These types are specified in the configuration (CFG) file and this enables you to display the configuration by type of function. Examples of function types are: communication, memory, mass storage, network, and video. 'Locked' is a board status. If you lock choices for a board, the status is shown as 'Locked'. A locked board has the highest priority for resources. This utility will not change a locked board's choices. When a board or option is added to the configuration, this utility will load the board or option's configuration (CFG) file and any extension (or OVL) files which may exist. If the utility cannot find the OVL file, a message will be displayed informing you that the OVL file is missing. You should go back to the main menu and select Copy CFG files from option diskette before using the Configure Computer selection. If the OVL file is still missing, contact your support representative for help. When a board or option is added to the configuration, this utility will load the board or option's configuration (CFG) file. If the utility cannot find the CFG file, a message will be displayed informing you that the CFG file is missing. You should go back to the main menu and select Copy CFG files from option diskette before using the Configure Computer selection. If the CFG file is still missing, contact your support representative for help. This utility can be run in modeling mode. This mode allows a computer dealer or system integrater to model and save possible configurations for later use on different computers. Nonvolatile memory is the memory in your computer which is powered by the internal battery. Information stored in this memory is saved even when you turn off your computer. Nonvolatile memory is also known as CMOS memory. This utility will display a message if a valid configuration cannot be found for the computer with its current selection of boards and options. You should remove all the boards (except the system board) and add them back into the configuration one at a time to find the board or options causing the problem. A configuration may be recovered from a previously created System Configuration Information (SCI) file by selecting Open (on the System pull-down menu). The utility will display a list of SCI files. Select a configuration to open by using the arrow keys to highlight the name of the file and pressing [Enter]. Configurations are stored in system configuration information (SCI) files as well as in nonvolatile memory. When you have created a configuration, select 'Save and Exit' on the Exit menu. The configuration will be saved to an SCI file and in nonvolatile memory. You may also make a back-up copy of a configuration by selecting 'Save As' from the System pull-down menu.
