These Servers come with:
All PC Server 320 models are designed and tested for reliability and compatibility. FloThru cooling, stringent IBM assurance testing, FCC Class B certification, a three year on-site limited warranty, and in- depth compatibility testing with IBM and non-IBM adapters and network operating systems are steps we take so you can be sure you've made the "right" buying decision when you select an IBM PC Server 320.
Note: (1) NetFinity is formally called PC SystemView in releases after V3.06.
The IBM PC Server provides customers with an industry standard entry LAN server of exceptional value. This server is rich in expansion capacity and configuration flexibility, compatible with the popular network operating systems and provides solid LAN server performance across a wide range of LAN environments. The PC Server has been designed to achieve very low price points while maintaining high levels of reliability and strong performance.
The PC Server offers rugged dependability by incorporating various quality standards and measures such as stringent IBM quality testing and a new cooling design, called FloThru*. FloThru cooling enables longer life for the electronic components in this server.
A full three-year, on-site product warranty, plus IBM PC HelpCenter* support is included. An optional one-year warranty is available via a special bid.
PC Server 300 - User Productivity
The PC Server provides scalable performance to address a wide range of LAN application requirements, from basic entry to environments of moderate complexity. These systems feature 256KB Level 2 write-back caches, IDE interfaces, and a very robust PCI bus architecture capable of supporting up to 132MB/sec data transfer rates from disk and network I/O adapter cards to the processor subsystem. In addition, these servers contain an EISA bus which can accept a wide range of compatible adapters available in the industry.
Performance in a LAN server can be significantly enhanced by using large amounts of memory for a disk cache. The PC Servers provide more than ample memory capacity by supporting up to 128MB of memory on the 486 models and 192MB of memory on the Pentium models.
Value Oriented LAN Environments:
The 486DX2-66MHz models contain two IDE interface ports integrated on the system board. One of these ports is an Enhanced, or Fast, IDE PCI interface that can handle up to two high speed IDE devices. As part of the product offering IBM provides a 728MB hard drive to attach to this new Fast IDE interface port which supports hard disks of greater than 527MB and data rates of up to 11MB/sec. With these two IDE ports, a customer can install two large capacity 728MB IDE hard disks for disk mirroring and install up to two more standard IDE devices such as hard disks or CD-ROMs. If greater performance and higher amounts of data storage are required, the SCSI-2 Fast PCI-Bus Adapter can be added to support up to seven SCSI hard drives. These combinations of price performing processors, multiple integrated IDE controllers and high- capacity IDE hard disks along with SCSI optional features, provide very economical yet powerful solutions for entry to mid-size LANs.
Performance Oriented LAN Environments:
For customers who want higher levels of performance, but still at a modest price point, the PC Server is offered in two Pentium 60MHz models. Both models feature a standard 256KB L2 write-back cache which can be optionally upgraded to 512KB. These models feature one standard IDE port for attachment of IDE devices. One model is designed for a very high level of configuration flexibility in that it contains no hard disk. This means that a customer or reseller can equip this PC Server with an IBM or non-IBM SCSI adapter and hard disk to match virtually any customer application requirement. The other model contains a high performance IBM SCSI-2 Fast PCI-Bus Adapter and SCSI-2 Fast 1.0GB hard disk. IBM offers several high speed (less than 9ms access times) hard disks to configure with the IBM SCSI-2 adapter or other supported non-IBM PCI or EISA SCSI adapters. These disk drives are offered in 540MB, 1.0GB and 2.0GB versions.
Whatever the choice, IBM PC Servers provide a "building block" platform to match virtually any LAN application response time requirements to a cost effective solution. cost effective user productivity through performance technology attributes, the PC Server uses FloThru* cooling to keep server electronics and drive components running cooler for longer life and greater reliability. FloThru features a temperature sensing power supply fan, as well as a secondary fan to super cool the system board, processor and adapter cards. These fans in conjunction with a fully vented front bezel allow large volumes of air to flow, front to rear, through the server. This feature provides greater server uptime to maximize client productivity as well as keeping your business running.
PC Server 300 - System Security
The IBM PC Server contains levels of security necessary for the environment for which it was designed. The following security features are provided:
PC Server 300 - Growth Enablement
Storage Device Expansion:
PC Servers offer generous amounts of expansion capacity to meet today's application needs or future requirements. These servers contain nine storage bays, eight of which can accept devices that use removable media. The top six bays are 5.25-inch, half-high bays which can support either 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch devices. Further flexibility is provided in that four of these six bays can be converted to two full-high 5.25-inch storage bays. There are three lower 3.5-inch, one-inch high drive bays. Two of these bays support floppy diskette drive interface devices only, while the lowest of the three bays is designed for a standard or optional hard disk drive. All of the expansion bays are drilled with elongated holes to support fastening of a wide selection of industry standard devices such as hard disks, CD-ROM and tape backup. PC Servers have the capability to support up to 14.0GB of internal data storage.
Adapter Card Expansion:
The PC Server has nine physical expansion slots. One PCI or EISA slot is shared. This means that the server can be configured with either three PCI adapters and five EISA/ISA adapter cards, or two PCI adapters and six EISA/ISA adapter cards. All PC Server models have a video card installed in one of the EISA/ISA slots. The PC Server Pentium model, equipped with the 1.0GB SCSI hard disk, contains a SCSI-2 Fast PCI-Bus Adapter installed in one of the PCI adapter slots.
PCI adapters are rapidly entering the marketplace. IBM and other vendors currently have SCSI-2 adapters, while several vendors have indicated additional cards will be offered over the upcoming months. Please see the External Attachment of this announcement for a list of PCI adapters currently tested with the PC Server.
Memory Expansion:
PC Server models containing the 486DX2-66MHz processor can support up to 128MB of industry standard parity memory. These systems contain four SIMM sockets two of which contain 4MB SIMMs to provide 8MB of standard system memory. PC Server models with Pentium can support up to 192MB of industry standard parity memory by filling out the six memory SIMM sockets provided with 32MB SIMMs. The Pentium versions come standard with 16MB of memory consisting of two 8MB SIMMs.
PC Server 300 - Investment Protection
PC Server systems contain the new PCI bus architecture which is emerging as the industry standard for advanced bus design. This architecture provides the strong performance characteristics necessary to support LAN server busmaster adapter cards. By combining a secondary EISA bus, these systems allow customers to conveniently bridge to the new PCI technology as new adapters and applications become available to the marketplace.
PC Server 300 - Additional Support for PC Server Configurations
The IBM SCSI-2 Fast PCI-Bus Adapter (F/C 1923, 32G3100) is a high- performance PCI SCSI-2 adapter for internal and external attachment of up to seven SCSI or SCSI-2 Fast devices. This adapter supports 10MB/sec data transfer rates, contains an ASPI manager and features tag command queuing support for popular network operating systems such as NetWare**, OS/2*, Windows NT**.
To support external connection of SCSI devices to the SCSI-2 Fast PCI-Bus Adapter, an IBM SCSI-2 Card (50 pin) to SCSI Option Cable is also being announced. This 50 to 50-pin, high-density cable (F/C 2567, P/N 70G9874) is 1.5 meters long.
The IBM PC Server Cable Kit (F/C 3052, P/N 70G9264) contains a two drop IDE signal cable and a seven drop SCSI signal cable. This option is designed for adding two additional IDE drives to the second IDE port of the PC Server 486DX2 models. The seven drop SCSI cable supports expansion of PC Server models when a SCSI adapter card is added. In addition, the seven drop SCSI cable is required on the PC Server 8640-0PT and 8640-PPT if expanding beyond four SCSI devices.
Standard features for PC Server 320 include:
The Pentium** processor subsystem with SMP upgradability, coupled to a PCI advanced bus and state of the art PCI SCSI-2 Fast/Wide or SCSI-2 Fast/Wide RAID controller, create a high performance LAN server platform to handle heavy file server applications or moderate data base applications.
PC Server 320 - High Performance Processor Subsystem
The PC Server 320 systems are high performance LAN server solutions scalable for growth. All models incorporate a powerful 90MHz, 100MHz, or 133MHz Pentium processor with SMP upgradability, 256KB L2 write-back cache and 16MB of system memory.
The PC Server 320 processor subsystem provides outstanding performance in compute intensive operations such as a data base server or to support a large number of clients for file server applications. The SMP capability extends processing performance further by allowing tasks to be dispatched to the next available processor rather then being queued until the busy processor has completed its current task. This SMP capability also provides a level of high availability in that with some operating systems, such as OS/2 SMP, run in a uniprocessor mode if one of the processors should experience failure. This function will allow the LAN to continue operating so that service can be scheduled during non- critical times.
PC Server 320 - Configuration Flexibility
The PC Server 320 is a full tower mechanical package designed for efficient cooling, system security and expansion with a wide array of industry standard devices and adapters both from IBM and from third parties. All models feature nine adapter slots, three PCI and six EISA, with one slot being shared (1 PCI and 1 EISA connector). This means you can install either three PCI adapter cards and five EISA cards or two PCI cards and six EISA cards. All models contain high performance SCSI-2 Fast/Wide controllers which support either conventional hard disks or RAID configurations, dependent upon model. In addition, a double-or quad-speed SCSI CD-ROM is a standard feature across all PC Server 320 offerings. Also, standard is an SVGA video adapter with 1MB of display memory, located in one of the EISA card slots, and an IDE controller is integrated on the system board. A 300 watt power supply provides ample power to support standard and maximum configurations. FloThru cooling helps ensure electronic components stay cooler for higher reliability. All PC Server 320 systems contain a temperature controlled power supply fan, a secondary cooling fan for the system board and adapters, as well as heat sinks on the microprocessors. The mechanical package is designed with top to bottom functional louvers and rear vents for efficient front to rear air flow.
Non Array Models:
The PC Server 320 standard models are highly configurable servers which allow installation of drive devices of various capacities and form factors.
PC Server 320 -- 75 MHz models:
Array Models (100/133MHz):
The PC Server 320 array models (8640-1Z0,-1D0,-1DS) provide high availability and fault tolerance through the use of hot-swap drive bays and RAID technology.
The configuration flexibility of PC Server 320 is a key benefit to customers establishing a LAN. Installations must be capable of supporting not only the adapters and devices necessary for the number of clients being served today, but there must be room for growth as either the clients supported increases or their need for additional applications expand. The PC Server 320 provides a reliable platform with both the flexibility to handle applications for today and expansion capacity for future growth. The standard CD-ROM drive allows quick and easy installation of popular software applications, as well as for accessing ServerGuide and NetFinity functions.
PC Server 320 - High Performance Disk Subsystems
The PC Server 320s offer various levels of performance and fault tolerance dependent upon which models are selected.
IBM PC Server SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PCI Adapter contains driver support for popular network operating systems such as NetWare**, OS/2*, Windows-NT**, SCO** and Unixware**.
These disk subsystems available on the PC Server 320 provide customers with a cost effective means to increase productivity of their work groups connected to this server. Each component and device of these subsystems are designed for the best possible performance achievable for a server of its class. The array models provide fault tolerance and high- availability by protecting data in the event of a hard drive failure. The hot swap capability allows a failed drive to be replaced "on the fly" without taking the system down to install a replacement drive. Data on the failed hard disk drive is simply rebuilt onto the new drive in the background while maintaining service to the clients to avoid lost productivity.
PC Server 320 - Systems Management
All PC Server 320s feature NetFinity, a comprehensive systems management tool using a graphical interface, which is contained on CD for installation convenience. NetFinity allows the LAN administrator to monitor and manage NetWare and OS/2 LAN servers from either OS/2 or Windows 3.1 workstations.
Because LANs are normally decentralized, management and control can be very costly. IBM recognizes the need to place computing power where it is really needed, and provide products to help manage the LAN more efficiently. NetFinity was designed to give you total charge of your LAN, and even warn you of an impending failure so it can be handled in a controlled and cost-effective manner.
The remote server management provided by NetFinity greatly improves the LAN administrator's productivity and remote LAN management capability. This saves money and time and contributes to lower network operating costs, less travel to remote sites, reduced downtime, and much better overall control through active monitoring, fault prevention, and faster problem resolution.
PC Server 320 - Start Up Support/Ease of Use
The PC Server 320 comes with IBM's new "PC Server Start Up Support" that provides additional HelpWare coverage during the first 90 days from installation. The IBM PC Server Start Up Support program is available on PC Server 300, 500 and 700 Lines, as well as PS/2 Server 85, 95 and 95A systems. This new comprehensive program enhances IBM HelpWare support for setup, installation, configuration and problem determination by providing assistance for popular network operating systems, network interface cards and workstation adapters from IBM and non-IBM vendors.

IBM(R) PC Server 320 PCI/EISA models (8640-0Z0,-0ZV,-1Z0, -0D0,-0DV,-1D0,-1DS) are designed to maintain compatibility with the following IBM products. In some cases hardware drivers may require update to support SMP operations in various network operating system environments. If problems are encountered when running dual processors, please consult IBM HelpWare at the HelpCenter on 800-772-2227 in the US; in Canada, please call 800-565-3344; in all other countries, contact the IBM support organization that services your area, your IBM marketing representative, or your remarketer.
The user should ensure that the total power required to support the desired system configuration is within the power provided by the PC Server 320. The user should also ensure that the total (internal/external) SCSI cable length does not exceed that specified by the ANSI standard when attaching SCSI devices.

Non-IBM Hardware Compatibility
The following list of adapters have been tested for compatibility with these PC Server 320 PCI/EISA models by IBM and non-IBM testing laboratories. PC Server 320 is designed to meet PCI, EISA and ISA standards and should be compatible with many non-IBM adapters and devices that adhere to these standards. However, IBM cannot guarantee that all configurations will be compatible in all network operating system environments. In addition, IBM offers no warranty on non-IBM adapter cards. Customers should contact the card vendor or place of purchase for warranty information and to verify that hardware drivers have been updated to support dual processors with the network operating system being used for the installation.

The PC Server is an entry enterprise LAN server designed using industry standard architectures. These servers contain three bus architectures:
The PC Server 300 comes in models using two different Intel microprocessors. The 80486DX2-66MHz is used in models 8640-0Nx, while the Pentium 60MHz is featured in models 8640-0Px. All models feature 256KB write-back L2 cache and one or two IDE controllers integrated on the system board.
All PC Server 320s contain up to a 133MHz Pentium microprocessor with a standard 256KB L2 write-back cache and a second microprocessor upgrade socket. These servers can be upgraded to SMP capability by adding a second 90MHz Pentium processor. The PC Server 320s also support up to 512KB L2 write-back cache through the installation of the IBM 256KB L2 Cache Kit for uni-or dual-processor applications.
PC Servers are packaged in a full tower mechanical platform offering nine storage expansion bays (non-array models) or 10 storage expansion bays (array models) and nine adapter slots. One of these slots is shared. Adapter configuration can consist of three PCI adapters and five EISA adapters, or two PCI adapters and six EISA adapters.
The PC Server 300 standard features include:

The SMP 90MHz Upgrade is a 90MHz Pentium microprocessor designed to be installed in the second processor socket of PC Server 320 systems. This upgrade heightens processor subsystem performance and provides a level of processor fault tolerance when using certain operating systems such as IBM OS/2* for SMP. It is recommended that L2 cache be upgraded to 512KB and system memory increased to at least 32MB to optimize system performance when using the SMP 90MHz upgrade in PC Server 320 systems.
The 256KB L2 Cache Kit provides 256KB L2 write-back cache for upgrading the standard 256KB cache to 512KB L2 cache in PC Server 320 systems. This upgrade is suggested in compute-intensive applications such as a data base server or when upgrading to the SMP 90MHz dual processor for these same applications.
The PC Server SCSI-2 F/W PCI Adapter is a high-performance PCI adapter which is supported in all IBM PC Servers with the PCI bus architecture. This adapter contains two internal ports. One internal port is Fast/Wide, while the other is Fast. This feature provides customers with a choice of using either SCSI-2 Fast/Wide internal devices or SCSI-2 Fast internal devices. In addition, this ASPI compliant adapter contains an external Fast/Wide port which combined with the internal ports can support up to fifteen SCSI-2 Fast/Wide devices. Advanced SCSI features such as tagged queuing, scatter/gather, multi-threaded I/O, disconnect/reconnect, synchronous and asynchronous Fast and Wide are all supported functions.
The PC Server F/W Internal SCSI Cable is a seven drop SCSI-2 Fast/Wide cable used to attach Fast/Wide devices in PC Server 300 and 320 systems that contain an IBM PC Server SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PCI Adapter or an IBM PC Server SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PCI-Bus RAID Adapter. This cable is standard in the PC Server 320 non-array hard disk models.
This feature is an external cable which contains a 68 pin high density connector on each end. This cable uses industry standard ANSI tab connectors and measures one meter in length. It can be used to attach SCSI-2 Fast/Wide devices to the external ports of either the IBM PC Server SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PCI Adapter or IBM PC Server SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PCI-Bus RAID Adapter.
This feature is an external cable which contains a 68 pin high density tab connector on one end and a 50 pin Centronics connector on the other. This cable is one meter in length and can be used to attached SCSI or SCSI-2 Fast devices to the external ports of either the IBM PC Server SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PCI Adapter or IBM PC Server SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PCI-Bus RAID Adapter.
The Security Cover provides additional system security by preventing unauthorized access to PC Server 320 external ports and cover retaining screws.
Allows you to mount 8-bit SCSI (narrow) hard disks for hot-swap use.
Allows you to mount 16-bit SCSI (wide) hard disks for hot-swap use.
The IBM PC Server 300 Hot-Swap Bay Option is a cost-effective, mechanical assembly which converts the top five 5.25-inch, half-high drive bays of all PC Server 300 and 320 systems into six, 3.5-inch, hot- swap drive bays ready to accommodate IBM 1.12GB, 2.25GB or 4.5 SCSI-2 Fast/Wide hot-swap hard disk drives.
This feature is a high performance PCI RAID adapter which provides hardware implemented RAID levels 0, 1, and 5. This two channel RAID adapter can support up to seven SCSI-2 Fast/Wide drives per channel. Utilities and drivers are included for popular operating systems such as OS/2, NetWare**, Windows NT** and SCO**. The IBM PC Server SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PCI-Bus RAID Adapter in conjunction with the IBM PC Server 300 Hot-Swap Bay Option provides a very high performance, cost effective hard disk fault tolerant solution for all members of the PC Server 300 family. In addition, this adapter provides RAID support on conventional hard disks installed in PC Server 300 Line, as well as external hot-swap solutions using 3516 DASD Hot Swap Expansion Enclosures.
The Intel i960 based IBM Ethernet Quad-BT PeerMaster PCI Server Adapter provides server connection to 4 Ethernet segments with each adapter, with integrated adapter based packet switching function. With multiple adapters, up to 24 segments can be attached per server. The IBM Ethernet Quad-BT PeerMaster PCI Server Adapter supports attachment of 10Base-T segments.
Software support: Device drivers are provided for Novell NetWare 3.1X/4.0X, IBM OS/2 LAN Server 3.X/4.0, Windows NT and SCO Open Server (see availability information for schedules).
Maximum Number of Features: Up to 2 Quad PeerMaster adapters are supported per system, in IBM PC Server 300, IBM PC Server 320 and the IBM PC Server 520; up to 6 adapters are supported in a IBM PC Server 720.
Prerequisites: None. Corequisites: None. Compatibility Conflicts: None. Customer Setup: Yes.
Limitations: The IBM Ethernet Quad-BT PeerMaster PCI Server Adapters are PCI type adapters, and therefore can be installed only in systems with available PCI slots. In a PC Server 300, 320 or 520, only slots 2 and 3 are suitable for installation of these adapters.
Field Installable: Yes. Cable Orders: None.
Installability: The features in this announcement require 2 hours for installation and set-up for the basic adapter and external connection. The more complex upgrades can require 3-4 hours or longer.
